Wagener Hockey Stadium History

The Wagener Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. It is currently used primarily for field hockey matches and hosted games during the 1973 Hockey World Cup. The stadium has a seating capacity of 7,600. The complex has been owned by the Dutch Hockey Association (*Koninklijke Nederlandse Hockey Bond*) since 1980.

It is located in the Amsterdamse Bos in Amstelveen. It was built by the Amsterdam Hockey and Bandy Club (AHBC) in honor of its president, Joop Wagener (1881–1945). Construction was completed in 1938, two years before the outbreak of World War II in the Netherlands. By the 1970s, it became clear that the AHBC could no longer afford to maintain the stadium, so it was eventually sold to the *Koninklijke Nederlandse Hockey Bond*. The AHBC retains the primary right to use the stadium for matches.
