Captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a challenging task. A captain is held accountable for almost everything, and the pressure to lead from the front makes it even more arduous. In IPL 2026 while some captains delivered stellar performances under pressure, steering their teams forward with excellent strategies and consistency others appeared to lack confidence on the field. Their own lackluster batting or bowling performances further compounded the pressure on their respective teams. In this list, let us take a look at the top 5 worst-performing captains of IPL 2026.

1. Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians)

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya's performance as the captain of the Mumbai Indians has been extremely disappointing. After suffering defeats in five of their first seven matches, his captaincy faced severe criticism. Apart from certain captaincy decisions that drew scrutiny, a significant decline was also observed in his own individual performance; in the first eight matches, Pandya has scored a mere 146 runs, maintaining an average of 20.86 and a strike rate of 136. As for his bowling, he has taken only four wickets at an economy rate of 11.90.

2. Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Ajinkya Rahane

Taking the helm of a high-pressure franchise like KKR proved to be a monumental challenge for Rahane. Under his captaincy, KKR remained mired in a prolonged losing streak for several weeks. As an anchor batsman, his composed approach failed to yield significant results in today's fast-paced T20 environment, causing KKR to slide down the points table.

Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have endured yet another disappointing season. The veteran Indian batsman himself has been struggling with his form; across 12 matches, he has scored 251 runs at an average of 22.82 and a strike rate of 130. Despite being entrusted with the crucial responsibility of opening the innings, Rahane has failed to lead the team effectively.

3. Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants)

Rishabh Pant LSG

Rishabh Pant is the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, and he has faced a consistent struggle throughout this entire season. Initially, he was in good form and even scored a half-century. However, despite numerous changes to the batting order, he subsequently faced significant difficulties in scoring runs. With just one half-century in 13 matches, the left-handed batsman has amassed a total of 286 runs,

maintaining an average of 28.60 and a strike rate of 140. Pant's strategic acumen failed to yield results for LSG, preventing him from finding his full rhythm in the tournament. Barring his sole unbeaten innings of 68 runs against SRH, Pant's average hovered at a disappointing 24.50 a performance that placed immense pressure on the middle order and ultimately prevented LSG from securing a spot in the playoffs.

4. Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings)

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been one of the most disappointing players of this season. Batting as an opener, he has scored just 321 runs in 13 matches, maintaining an average of 29.18. Gaikwad's strike rate has also been quite poor, standing at a mere 120.67. Many fans have criticized his slow batting approach. Stepping out of the shadow of MS Dhoni's captaincy proved to be Gaikwad's biggest challenge. The burden of captaincy responsibilities had a severely adverse effect on the natural flow of his batting; consequently, his average in the first seven matches stood at a mere 14.86, and he made several slow and ineffective starts.

5. Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals)

Riyan Parag

Ahead of the 2026 IPL season, Riyan Parag was appointed as the full-time captain of the Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, he is struggling to deliver his best performance. In 11 matches, this right-handed batsman has scored 258 runs at an average of 25.80 and a strike rate of 151. He scored half-centuries in two matches, but on most other occasions, he was dismissed cheaply.
