South Africa's preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have encountered a significant setback with the withdrawal of fast bowler Anrich Nortje due to a back injury. Nortje, aged 31, was anticipated to be a pivotal component of South Africa's pace attack in the tournament scheduled to commence on February 19, 2025, in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
Nortje's career has been marred by a series of injuries. He missed the 2019 World Cup because of a broken thumb and was absent from the 2023 edition due to a lower back stress fracture. In December 2024, he was sidelined from the white-ball series against Pakistan owing to a toe injury. His most recent setback, a back injury, was confirmed after scans earlier this week, ruling him out of both the ongoing SA20 league and the forthcoming Champions Trophy.

Nortje's absence leaves a considerable void in South Africa's bowling arsenal. Known for his express pace and ability to unsettle batsmen, his presence was expected to bolster South Africa's chances in the tournament. The team management now faces the challenge of identifying a suitable replacement who can deliver under the high-pressure environment of an ICC event.
Gerald Coetzee emerges as a leading candidate to replace Nortje. Coetzee was South Africa's leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup but has been grappling with injuries since then. He was initially overlooked for the Champions Trophy squad in favor of Nortje's experience. South Africa's white-ball coach, Rob Walter, had previously commented on the selection dilemma, stating, "They both offer high pace but Anrich has a little bit more experience and potentially some attributes that will stand us in good stead in Pakistan."
Another potential replacement is 18-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who has been making waves in domestic cricket with his raw pace and wicket-taking abilities. The selection panel will need to deliberate carefully to ensure the chosen player can seamlessly integrate into the squad and perform on the international stage.
Despite Nortje's withdrawal, South Africa boasts a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising talents in their squad. The team is led by captain Temba Bavuma and includes key players such as Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Keshav Maharaj. New additions like Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder are set to make their debut in a 50-over ICC event, bringing fresh energy to the side.
In the Champions Trophy, South Africa is placed in Group B alongside formidable opponents: Afghanistan, England, and Australia. Their campaign is set to begin on February 21 against Afghanistan in Karachi, Pakistan. The team will need to strategize effectively to navigate the group stages, especially in the absence of key players like Nortje.
