Rohit Sharma broke several records with century against England

On Thursday's second day of the fifth Test in Dharamsala, Indian captain Rohit Sharma struck yet another century against England, breaking numerous records in the process.

The Indian captain scored 13 boundaries and three sixes in an innings that saw him reach his 12th Test century off 162 balls.

Along the way, he became the opener with the most Test hundreds against England with four, joining the illustrious Sunil Gavaskar in that regard. With three tons against the Three Lions, Vijay Merchant, Murali Vijay, and KL Rahul follow the two luminaries.

1. Rohit Sharma surpasses Chris Gayle's record

Before the five-match Test series against England, Rohit Sharma had equalled Sanath Jayasuriya's (41) international century count at 41. In the third Test match in Rajkot, the veteran scored a century to surpass the set by the Sri Lankan icon and tie Chris Gayle's record (42).In the fifth Test in Dharamshala, Rohit produced yet another century to surpass Gayle and take the third spot among openers in international cricket history for most centuries made. Hitman trails Sachin Tendulkar (45) and David Warner (49) in the standings.

2. Rohit Sharma equals Rahul Dravid's century record

The Mumbai-born cricketer tore through his 48th international century in the opening session of the fifth Test match at Dharamshala against England.By doing so, he tied Rahul Dravid's record for most centuries scored overall as an Indian batter in international cricket, making him the third-most joint century-scorer of all time. At the top of the list with 100 and 80 hundreds, respectively, are Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

3. Rohit Sharma tops the list of Indian players with the most Test tons in 2021

Over the past three years, players such as Rohit, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been setting the standard for the batting attack.Notably, Rohit leads the chart with six Test hundreds to his name, making him the most prolific scorer for India since 2021. Shubman Gill comes in second with four scores.

4. In Tests, Rohit Sharma matches Sunil Gavaskar's record

The Indian captain grabbed attention when he tied Sunil Gavaskar's record for the most hundreds scored by an Indian opener against England in Test cricket.Gavaskar opened the Test against England with four tons, and Rohit followed suit in the Dharamshala Test with a century. With three Test tons apiece, Vijay Merchant, Murali Vijay, and KL Rahul are the next three on the list.
