In a significant milestone for sports in Lucknow, the city is set to host the prestigious International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy for Men’s Youth and Junior (Continental Phase - Asia). This marks the first time Lucknow will host such a high-profile international handball event. The tournament begins on January 3 at the state-of-the-art Atal Bihari Vajpayee Multi-Purpose Hall, located within the iconic KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium.
The Uttar Pradesh Handball Association (UPHA) General Secretary, Anandeshwar Pandey, announced that the tournament will feature four participating nations: India, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. These teams will compete in both youth and junior categories. As a qualification tournament, the stakes are high, with the winner earning a spot in the World Championship.
"This tournament is a major step forward for handball in India," said Pandey. "We are excited to see these young athletes showcase their skills on an international stage."
India’s youth team will face Uzbekistan in the opening match on January 3. The junior team will also launch its campaign against Uzbekistan on the same day. The anticipation and excitement around the event were amplified during the official unveiling of the championship trophies, attended by UPHA President Alka Das and Anandeshwar Pandey.

In local football action, Mohammad Tufail emerged as the hero for Aliganj Warrior Club, scoring two goals in their 4–2 victory over Milani Club during a league match of the 7th Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Memorial Football Tournament. Tufail’s goals came in the 17th and 31st minutes, while teammates Priyanshu and Yash Rawat added to the tally in the 39th and 44th minutes, respectively. Milani Club’s Abuzar and Rajendra scored one goal each in response.
Earlier in the day, Lucknow City edged out LDA Aliganj 1–0, with Aman securing the lone goal in the 13th minute.
