Following their disastrous performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Arjuna Ranatunga, a former captain of Sri Lanka, has blasted Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), for damaging Sri Lankan cricket.
The Sri Lankan tabloid Daily Mirror cited Arjuna Ranatunga as saying, "They (the BCCI) are under the impression they can trample and control SLC because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah."
"Sri Lanka Cricket is managed by Jay Shah. Jay Shah is putting pressure on SLC to wreck it. The captain of Sri Lanka, who won the World Cup in 1996, claimed that 'one man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket.'
'His father, India's home minister, is the only reason he has power.'
Much has transpired in Sri Lankan cricket during the last week, both on and off the field. Sri Lanka did not enter the 2025 Champions Trophy after finishing ninth in the points rankings.
A day after the SLC board was dismissed by Roshan Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka's minister of sports, Arjuna Ranatunga chaired an interim committee. However, a day later, the country's courts issued a 14-day stay order on the dissolution of the board, thereby restoring the board.
A few days later, the ICC suspended the cricket board with immediate effect due to significant government meddling in the board's management.
