As co-hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified directly for the main tournament. In addition to them, the top eight teams in the ICC Men's ODI rankings based on the standings as of September 30, 2026 will gain direct entry into the main draw.
If South Africa finishes within the top eight of the rankings independently of their host status, the team ranked ninth will also secure a direct qualification spot. The remaining four slots in this 14-team tournament will be decided through the ICC ODI World Cup Qualifier, scheduled to take place in early 2027.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured their spots by virtue of being co-hosts. However, despite being the third co-host, Namibia will not be granted a direct spot because they are not an ICC Full Member nation. Namibia will have to play in the qualifier round to earn a place in the main tournament.

The eight teams qualifying directly will be determined based on the rankings. Currently, the Indian cricket team holds the top spot on the ODI rankings leaderboard.

Full-member teams like the two-time world champions West Indies and Ireland appear to be out of the race for direct qualification. Both these teams will have to compete against eight other teams in the ODI World Cup qualifiers scheduled for early 2027, from which only four teams will advance to the main World Cup tournament.
