ICC Mens ODI World Cup 2027 New Format and Rules: There is fantastic news for cricket lovers! The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a brand-new and unique format for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. This time, the mega-tournament will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
To enhance the fan experience and ramp up the excitement, the number of participating teams has been increased from 10 to 14. However, there is a twist: the tournament will unfold across three distinct stages unlike anything seen before. Let’s break down the structure of this new 2027 format in simple terms.

Although 14 teams will participate in the 2027 World Cup, not all of them will gain direct entry into the main group stage. To make the tournament more competitive, the ICC has divided it into three main rounds leading up to the semi-finals and the final.
Stage 1: The 'Super Series' (Preliminary Qualifier)
The tournament will kick off with the 'Super Series'. This is essentially a knockout battle to secure a spot in the main tournament.
- Who plays?: The three lowest-ranked teams according to ICC rankings (i.e., the teams in 12th, 13th, and 14th place).
- Format: These three teams will compete against each other in a round-robin format.
- Outcome: Only the top-ranked team among the three will advance to the next stage, while the other two will be immediately eliminated from the tournament.
Note: While 14 teams will technically be involved initially, the main competition following the Super Series will actually be contested by 12 teams.

Stage 2: The Group Stage (Group of 6 each)
A total of 12 teams will compete in this stage, comprising the one team that qualified from the Super Series and the 11 teams already in the fray.
- Group Division: These 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six:
- Group A: 6 teams
- Group B: 6 teams
- Format: Each team will play one match against the other five teams in its group (round-robin). A total of 30 matches will be played in this stage.
- Qualification Rule: The top three teams from each group will advance directly to the next round (making it six teams in total). This is where the twist comes in.
Stage 3: The 'Super 7' Round
This format is strongly reminiscent of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While six teams have advanced from the group stage, this round is called 'Super 7 ', meaning seven teams will compete in it. So, which team will be the seventh one?
- Best fourth-placed team: The records of the teams finishing in fourth (4th) place in both groups (A and B) will be compared. The team with more points (or a better net run rate in the event of a tie on points) will become the 7th team and enter the Super-7 stage.
- Super-7 Matches: In this stage, all 7 teams will play one match against each other (a total of 21 matches).
- Outcome: Based on the points table, the top 4 teams will qualify directly for the semi-finals.
Stage 4: Semifinals & Grand Finale
Knockout matches will be held between the top 4 teams of the Super-7 stage, with the following schedule:
- First Semifinal: Super-7 Team No. 1 vs. Team No. 4
- Second Semifinal: Super-7 Team No. 2 vs. Team No. 3
- Grand Finale: The winners of both semifinals will face each other in the final for the main title.
