How Indian Cricketers Play County Cricket Despite T20 League Ban: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considered the wealthiest and most powerful cricket board in the world. The BCCI does not permit its centrally contracted or domestic players to participate in overseas franchise T20 leagues.

However, several prominent Indian players have recently been seen showcasing their skills in the 'One-Day Cup' that began in England on July 21. Players ranging from Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal to young star Ashutosh Sharma are part of English domestic teams.

Naturally, this raises a question among fans: if there is a ban on playing in foreign leagues, how are Indian players able to go to England and play in the One-Day Cup or county cricket? Let us understand the rules governing this.

BCCI Rules and Regulations for Playing County Cricket in England

The BCCI's rule is very clear: whether a player is on the central contract list or plays domestic cricket, they are permitted to go to England and participate in County Cricket (Red-Ball) and List-A (One-Day Cup) tournaments.

However, there is one mandatory condition

Mandatory NOC (No Objection Certificate): Before traveling to England, a player must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the BCCI and their respective state cricket association. If the player is free from national team commitments or the domestic season, the BCCI readily grants this NOC.

Why BCCI Bans Indian Players from Foreign T20 Leagues

The BCCI maintains a strict stance regarding foreign T20 franchise leagues (such as the CPL, BBL, PSL, or SA20).

  • Brand Value & Workload Management: The BCCI believes that if Indian players participate in foreign T20 leagues, it would diminish the exclusivity and brand value of the IPL. Additionally, managing the players' fitness and workload would become difficult.
  • Post-Retirement Exemption: An Indian cricketer can participate in foreign T20 leagues only after retiring from all formats of Indian cricket, including international cricket and the IPL.
  • Example: Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was set to play for Sydney Thunder in a recent season of the Big Bash League (BBL) following his retirement from international cricket; however, he was unable to participate at the time due to an injury.

In short: County cricket and the One-Day Cup are part of traditional First-Class and List-A cricket, which help hone players' skills, whereas T20 franchise leagues are commercial in nature.
