Kylian Mbappe achieved a record that no player had managed before. He became the first footballer to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in two consecutive editions.
Mbappe had previously won the award at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he scored eight goals. Although France lost the final against Argentina, Mbappe’s performance was one of the biggest highlights of the tournament.
Four years later, he delivered another stunning campaign by scoring 10 goals in eight matches during the 2026 World Cup.

Mbappe’s 10 goals in the 2026 tournament made him the first player since Gerd Muller in the 1970 FIFA World Cup to score double-digit goals in a single World Cup edition.

- Just Fontaine (France) - 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup

Before the final, Lionel Messi was one of Mbappe’s biggest competitors for the Golden Boot. The Argentine star needed a strong performance in the final to challenge Mbappe’s lead.
However, Messi failed to score in the final, allowing Mbappe to secure the award. The French forward also moved ahead of Messi in the all-time FIFA World Cup goal-scoring chart.
