Following India's defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, questions loom over the futures of two of India's most celebrated cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With Rohit stepping down in the Sydney Test and Kohli struggling with his form, the cricketing world is abuzz with speculation about their future in Test cricket.
Rohit Sharma’s Test form has been underwhelming, averaging just 10.93 in his last eight matches, with only one fifty-plus score. Despite these struggles, he made a bold decision to sit out the fifth Test, believing his inclusion might hinder the team due to the number of out-of-form batters. In a conversation with Star Sports, Rohit clarified that he has no immediate plans to retire from Test cricket but acknowledged his recent struggles.
Virat Kohli, often regarded as one of the finest batters in the modern era, has also faced challenges. While he scored an unbeaten century in Perth, his vulnerability outside the off-stump led to dismissals in eight out of nine innings during the series. Kohli’s frustration was evident, as moments of brilliance were overshadowed by recurring lapses.
India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, offered measured support for both players while emphasizing the importance of hunger and passion in Test cricket.“Every individual knows where their game and hunger lie,” Gambhir remarked, highlighting the importance of self-assessment and team contributions.

Gambhir, a former player familiar with late-career struggles, stressed fairness in team selection. "Whether it’s a debutant or a seasoned player, my responsibility is to ensure fairness and transparency in decisions," he added.
India’s next Test series is against England in June 2025, leaving ample time to strategize. Both Rohit and Kohli will be nearing the twilight of their careers by then, prompting discussions about the inclusion of younger talents. Gambhir acknowledged this uncertainty, stating, “Forms change. Attitudes change. Everything changes in sport. We will plan for what’s best for Indian cricket.”
Gambhir also emphasized the importance of domestic cricket in preparing players for the red-ball format. "If players commit to domestic cricket, the Test team will gain stronger candidates," he said, advocating for consistent participation in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
With no Test matches until mid-2025, Indian cricket faces a pivotal phase. While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been pillars of the team, their recent form and age raise valid concerns. The next 18 months will be crucial in determining whether these icons can adapt or if India will transition to a new era led by fresh talent.
