Pathirana, who made his IPL debut for CSK in 2022, has impressed with his bowling this year and was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker after Mustafizur Rahman (14 wickets). His absence is a big setback for Men in Yellow because he was expected to play a big role for the franchise in the upcoming matches in Rahman’s absence. The Bangladeshi pacer has also left the IPL to return to his country as part of preparations for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
In IPL 2024, during CSK's match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 14, Pathirana won the Player of the Match award for taking four wickets for 28 runs in four overs. In his last match for CSK against SRH in Chennai, Pathirana bowled two overs and dismissed Heinrich Klaasen and Jaydev Unadkat.
