Ricky Ponting, who recently made it clear that he would not take up the role of England's white-ball coach, is once again trying to get an IPL coaching contract. Ponting recently resigned as the coach of Delhi Capitals after his seven-year contract ended and then went on to coach Washington Freedom in the MLC, leading the team to its first title. Meanwhile, there is speculation that he may be associated with the IPL again.
Ricky Ponting could get the role of head coach after Gautam Gambhir was made the coach of India. Current coach Chandrakant Pandit, who has done well for KKR, is one of the reasons KKR showed consistency and won IPL 2024. Although Pandit's coaching style has been scrutinized, Ponting could still be considered for the mentor role. It is also worth noting that Ponting played 10 matches for KKR in 2008, scoring 91 runs at an average of 10.11. There is no doubt that if he is brought in to take over Gambhir's role
Trevor Bayliss, who was appointed by PBKS in 2022, has not had the best of times with the team. Of the 42 IPL games he coached, PBKS won 18 and lost 24. He is set to be released as coach, which means PBKS could see changes, especially considering their poor performance due to lack of trust in the captain, which led to them finishing ninth. Ricky Ponting is certainly a strong option for PBKS if they want to win the IPL title.
Rajasthan Royals currently do not have a head coach. Kumar Sangakkara, who has been serving as the Director of Cricket since 2021, will no longer be in the role. Meanwhile, former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond and former Zimbabwean cricketer Trevor Penney are the assistant coaches. They seem to be lacking rhythm in IPL 2024. There are rumours that Rahul Dravid could be roped in for the RR coaching role, but if that happens, Ricky Ponting's vast experience of leading major IPL teams gives him an edge over Dravid.
