Netflix’s dark comedy phenomenon Wednesday is set to make a grand return, and this time, the Addams Family is bringing some thrilling surprises along for the ride. As the release date for Wednesday Season 2 draws closer, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have teased a new character that fans are expected to fall head over heels for, and it is none other than the legendary Joanna Lumley joining the eerie ensemble.

Joanna Lumley to Play Morticia’s Mother in Wednesday Season 2

In an exciting twist for longtime fans of the Addams Family lore, Wednesday Season 2 will introduce Hester Frump, Morticia Addams’ mother, played by the iconic Joanna Lumley. Best known for her hilarious portrayal of Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous, Lumley promises to bring a deliciously wicked charm to the spooky series.

Series co-creator Miles Millar shared in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum that Lumley’s arrival on set was nothing short of magical:

'The first day Joanna walked onto the set, she was Hester. She nailed every single line with such flair. Watching her interact with Wednesday brings a whole new energy. Audiences are going to fall in love with Hester.'

Judging by the brief but delightful glimpse of her in the newly released trailer, fans are in for a treat.

Season 2 of Wednesday is not just about Hester’s debut. The creators have pulled out all the stops, bringing in an exciting roster of new talent to flesh out Nevermore Academy and beyond. Big names joining the cast include:

  • Steve Buscemi as Principal Barry Dort, a mysterious new leader of Nevermore
  • Lady Gaga in a secretive role
  • Christopher Lloyd brings nostalgia for Addams Family enthusiasts
  • Billie Piper, Thandiwe Newton, Haley Joel Osment, and more

With this lineup, Wednesday Season 2 promises to be even more dynamic, darkly hilarious, and addictive.

What’s Next for Wednesday Addams?

Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams captivated audiences in the first season. Still, according to Gough and Millar, things are about to get even deeper and darker for the gothic teen.

'Wednesday’s journey becomes more complex as she tackles family dynamics, deep-rooted mysteries, and confronts familiar enemies,' the showrunners revealed.

Season 2 will heavily feature the Addams Family itself, with Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán) stepping into bigger roles at Nevermore. Most notably, Wednesday’s younger brother, Pugsley, played by Isaac Ordonez, will also join the academy, navigating his turbulent teenage journey in a world full of supernatural powers.

'Having your family at school is the worst nightmare, and for Wednesday, it is even worse.'

Expect to see Pugsley awkwardly finding his footing in this eerie new environment, much to Wednesday’s mixed horror and amusement.

Release Dates and What to Expect

Mark your calendars. Wednesday Season 2 will unfold in two parts:

  • Part 1: August 6, 2025
  • Part 2: September 3, 2025

If you need a refresher because it has been almost three years since Season 1 premiered, all episodes of the first season are available for streaming on Netflix.

The official synopsis hints at a chilling new supernatural mystery awaiting Wednesday, promising higher stakes, unexpected alliances, and the signature dark humour that made the show a global hit.
