Tamil superstar and politician Thalapathy Vijay is facing legal scrutiny even as he celebrates his party’s strong performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. A writ petition alleging income tax irregularities and undisclosed cash transactions against the actor has now reached the Madras High Court.
The court has directed its registry to officially register the petition, clearing the way for the matter to be heard before an appropriate bench.
Vijay Faces Petition Over Alleged Income Tax Irregularities
The case was initiated by petitioner M. Rajkumar, who alleged that Vijay concealed portions of his income and was involved in unaccounted cash dealings.
In the plea, the petitioner requested the Income Tax Department to reopen earlier investigation records and examine documents allegedly linked to financial irregularities. The petition also sought criminal proceedings against the actor under charges such as fraud and criminal conspiracy.
Additionally, the petitioner urged the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the matter further.

Vijay’s 2015 ‘Puli’ Income Tax Raid Back in Spotlight
The petition specifically references income tax raids conducted in 2015 following the release of Vijay’s film Puli.
According to the plea, search and seizure operations were carried out on September 30, 2015, at properties associated with the actor. During those raids, officials allegedly recovered documents indicating possible unaccounted cash transactions.
The petitioner has argued that these records should be re-examined and appropriate legal action should be initiated if any violations are found.
Why Did the High Court Step In to Hear Vijay’s Case?
Initially, the Madras High Court registry reportedly refused to register the petition, claiming that it was not legally maintainable.
However, a bench led by Chief Justice S. A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan questioned the registry’s decision. The court observed that the registry does not have the authority to decide whether a petition deserves judicial consideration.
The bench clarified that determining the merits of a case is solely the responsibility of judges, not administrative officials.

The High Court instructed the registry to assign a case number and place the matter before the appropriate judge for further consideration.
The bench also expressed dissatisfaction over repeated instances where petitions were allegedly being rejected at the registry level despite previous judicial directions.
According to the court, if all procedural requirements and documents are properly submitted, the registry must process the petition without independently assessing its legal strength.
What’s Next in the Vijay Tax Case?
With the petition now set to be officially registered, the matter will be listed before a competent bench of the Madras High Court. The court will then decide whether the allegations warrant further investigation or legal proceedings.
As of now, Vijay and his legal team have not issued any official response regarding the allegations or the court proceedings.
Vijay’s Political Success Overshadowed by Fresh Legal Controversy
The legal development comes at a crucial time for Vijay, who has been receiving widespread attention for his growing political influence in Tamil Nadu. While supporters continue to celebrate his electoral success, the emerging court case has added a new layer of controversy around the actor-turned-politician.
The upcoming hearings are expected to draw significant public and political attention in the coming weeks.
