Profile:

One can imagine if an opener idolizes Chris Gayle, he must be a strong hard hitter of the ball. John Campbell is one of those, a strong opener who loves smashing bowlers to all parts of the ground, right from the first delivery itself. Campbell is also a handy off-spinner who helps in getting crucial wickets at times, much like his idol.

Campbell has featured in the 2010 and 2012 U-19 World Cups before entering the domestic circuit. Although he was a hard-hitter of the ball, his inconsistency to score runs kept him away from the international scene for a brief period. All his struggles ended in 2019 when he first received his maiden international call-up in January 2019.

John made his Test debut in January 2019 against England and showcased an above-average performance with the bat. John was handed his maiden ODI cap in the following month against the same opposition. In March 2019, Campbell made his maiden T20I appearance against England but was sent back to the pavilion after scoring a disappointing 14 ball 11 on debut.

It was during the opening match of the 2019 Ireland Test Series when John dominated the Irish bowling line up and scored a mammoth 179. In the same match, along with Shai Hope, he stitched a 365-run opening partnership and made a mockery of the Irish bowling unit.

Campbell was named as one of the reserves for the 2019 World Cup but failed to get an opportunity at the mega event.
