Domestic Career

A product of the Rashid Latif Academy, this player made his Twenty20 debut for Karachi Kings in the 2017 Pakistan Super League on February 10, 2017. He made his first-class debut for Sindh in the 2020-21 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on November 20, 2020. In October 2021, he was included in the Pakistan Shaheens squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. He made his List A debut for Pakistan Shaheens against the Sri Lanka A cricket team on November 11, 2021.

Ahmed was picked by Islamabad United in the 2023 Pakistan Super League draft. Prior to the 2024 Pakistan Super League, he was traded to Quetta Gladiators.

International Career

In December 2022, Ahmed made his debut for Pakistan in the second Test match of the series against England. He became the first Pakistani bowler to take five wickets in the very first session of his Test debut; he claimed 7 wickets for 114 runs in the first innings and 4 wickets for 120 runs in the second. He also became the thirteenth Pakistani bowler to take a five-wicket haul on his Test debut.

Subsequently, he was included in the Pakistan squad for the Test series against New Zealand, where he once again took five wickets in the first innings of the opening Test.

In May 2024, he was selected for the Pakistan squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament.

Ahmed made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on November 26, 2024. He took 4 wickets for 33 runs, helping Pakistan restrict Zimbabwe to 145 runs and level the series 1–1.

In September 2025, during the 2025 Asia Cup, his bowling against Sri Lanka drew praise; he delivered a magnificent spell of 4-0-8-1 (an economy rate of 2.00) and bowled 16 dot balls. Analysts recognized Abrar's figures of 1/8 as the record for the fewest runs conceded in a four-over spell in the T20 Asia Cup.

In November 2025, during the third and final ODI of the home series against South Africa, Abrar produced his best-ever performance with figures of 4/27, helping Pakistan secure a seven-wicket victory and a 2–1 series win. Batting first, South Africa had reached 72 runs without loss, but their innings subsequently collapsed, and they were bowled out for 143 runs in 37.5 overs. Abrar triggered the collapse by taking three wickets in two overs. Pakistan chased down the target of 144 runs with 24.5 overs to spare, securing their third consecutive ODI series victory against South Africa. Abrar was named 'Player of the Match'.
