Muneeba Ali's run-out sparked controversy during the India vs. Pakistan Women's World Cup 2025 match. Pakistani captain Fatima Sana confronted the umpire, but according to ICC rules, Muneeba was actually out.
India defeated Pakistan by 88 runs to register another impressive victory in the Women's ODI World Cup 2025. However, the most talked-about moment of the match was when Pakistani batsman Muneeba Ali was run out in a bizarre manner. After her dismissal, Pakistani captain Fatima Sana confronted the umpire on the field and expressed her anger. However, replays and ICC rules confirmed that Muneeba was indeed out.
Indian young fast bowler Kranti Gaud was bowling the fourth over of the innings. The last ball of the over hit Muneeba Ali's pad and went towards slip. Deepti Sharma, showing agility, picked up the ball and threw it straight, causing the stumps to fall. India appealed for LBW, but the umpire rejected it.
Meanwhile, the run-out appeal went to the third umpire. Replays showed that Muneeba had initially reached her bat at the crease, but was in the air when the ball hit the stumps. As a result, the third umpire declared him run out.
According to ICC rule 30.1.1, a batsman is not considered "inside the crease" unless their body or bat is in full contact with the ground inside the crease.
However, according to rule 30.1.2, if a batsman dives or runs to reach the crease and their bat or body touches the ground, they are safe, even if the bat subsequently flies through the air.
But Muneeba was neither running nor diving in this situation. She was simply standing, and the ball was in play. Therefore, as soon as her bat was raised and the ball hit the stumps, she was declared out.
India batted first and scored 247 runs. Harleen Deol scored 46 and Richa Ghosh made a quickfire 35. In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for just 159. Sidra Amin played a strong innings of 81 runs, but the rest of the batsmen were unable to withstand the Indian bowlers.
India's "no handshakes" policy was also discussed during this match. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur refused to shake hands with Pakistani captain Fatima Sana during the toss. However, due to a technical glitch at the toss, Pakistan elected to bowl first.
With this victory, India recorded their 12th consecutive ODI win against Pakistan and their fifth in the World Cup. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team is now considered one of the strongest contenders for the tournament.
