Anil Kumble, a legend in Indian cricket, lavished admiration on Ravichandran Ashwin, underlining the veteran's ascent to 500 Test wickets at a Chennai function on Sunday.
After smashing numerous records during the just-finished five-match Test series against England at home, Ashwin made history. Despite playing below average in the first two games of the series, he was the leading wicket-taker with 26 wickets in 10 innings.
In the fourth Test match in Rajkot, the 37-year-old off-break spinner amassed 500 wickets. In Dharamsala, he finished the series with nine wickets in two innings. With 36 five-wicket hauls and 519 wickets at an average of 23.75 in 100 Test matches, Ashwin is now leading the pack.
After Kumble, Ashwin became the only bowler to reach 500 Test wickets. Kumble, who claimed 619 wickets in 132 Test matches, was in attendance at an event hosted by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association on Sunday to celebrate Ashwin's 500th Test wicket.
To get 500 Test wickets, the former Test skipper emphasized Ashwin's game-winning strategy and incredible consistency. Additionally, Kumble discusses how Ashwin's wickets helped India win red-ball cricket and commends Ashwin for his desire to go better.
'Ashwin has had as many challenges thrown at him,' Kumble stated. 'Not even one of them has been able to monitor his progress. For more than 10 years, he has been the nation's outstanding match-winner, and his consistency is a wonderful asset.
'He's put up incredible figures. If it doesn't help the team win, there's no joy in piling up the wickets. There is a strong link between his success and that of India. He's seldom been content to be exceptional or even very good. He strives to improve on the previous day every day. That indicates a highly capable student.'
