England batsman Joe Root has withdrawn his name from IPL 2024. Root made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2023. Rajasthan Royals issued a statement on Saturday 25 November giving this information. Root is the second England cricketer to withdraw from the IPL. Before him, all-rounder Ben Stokes had also decided not to play in IPL.
Rajasthan Royals cricket director Kumar Sangakkara said, 'Root informed us during the retention talks about not participating in IPL 2024. We respect his decision and wish him success in everything he does.
The auction for IPL 2024 is scheduled to take place on December 19. All the teams have to submit the list of retained and released players to the IPL administration on 26th November.
Joe Root, who was a part of the ODI World Cup held in India, has also been given a break from the West Indies tour. Joe Root was not included in the England team announced for the series of three ODIs and 5 T20 matches against West Indies from December 3.
England men's team managing director Rob Key had said after the announcement of the England team for the West Indies tour that Root needs a break after the World Cup. Root scored 276 runs in 9 matches of the ODI World Cup at an average of 30.66. During this period he also scored 3 half centuries.
Joe Root, who made his debut in the last season of IPL, was included by Rajasthan Royals in the mini auction of 2023 IPL for his base price of Rs 1 crore. Playing in 3 IPL matches, he scored only 10 runs at an average of 10.
Joe Root is the second England cricketer to withdraw from IPL. Before him, England all-rounder Ben Stokes had decided to withdraw from the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL) due to workload and fitness management. In 2023, Chennai bought him for Rs 16.25 crore. Stokes played only 2 matches for CSK.
