He continued to bat, but looked unwell and was eventually retired hurt after making 14 runs in 22 balls.
Ahmed was replaced by Mohammad Rizwan, who is a like-for-like replacement as a wicketkeeper-batter. Pakistan are ahead in the Test match, with Abdullah Shafique's unbeaten double hundred giving the team a massive first-innings lead.

It is not yet clear how serious Ahmed's injury is, but he is under the observation of the Pakistan Cricket Board's medical panel. The ICC playing conditions allow for a like-for-like replacement when "a player sustains a concussion or suspected concussion as a result of a head or neck injury during the course of the relevant match."
Ahmed's injury is a blow to Pakistan, but Rizwan is a capable replacement. Rizwan is a top-class wicketkeeper and a solid batter, and he will be looking to make his mark in the second Test.
