Ahmed was hit on the back of the head by a delivery from Asitha Fernando in the second session of the third day. He continued to bat, but looked unwell and was eventually retired hurt after making 14 runs in 22 balls.

Ahmed was replaced by Mohammad Rizwan, who is a like-for-like replacement as a wicketkeeper-batter. Pakistan are ahead in the Test match, with Abdullah Shafique's unbeaten double hundred giving the team a massive first-innings lead.

It is not yet clear how serious Ahmed's injury is, but he is under the observation of the Pakistan Cricket Board's medical panel.
