Paris Olympics 2024 Day 12 Live Updates: Indian Athletes Matches and Results

India's Day of Highs and Lows at Paris Olympics

Following a rollercoaster of emotions yesterday, India is back in action at the Paris Olympics. However, the day has taken a dramatic turn with the shocking news of Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the women's wrestling final.

The star wrestler, who had stunned the world by defeating reigning champion Yui Susaki and securing her spot in the final, has been unable to make weight. This heartbreaking development ends India's hopes for a gold medal in wrestling.

While this is a major setback, the Indian contingent will look to regroup and focus on other events. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will be aiming to add to India's medal tally in the women's 49kg category. Meanwhile, the track and field team, including Avinash Sable, Jyothi Yarraji, and Annu Rani, will be competing in their respective events. India's women's table tennis team will also be in action against Germany in the quarterfinals.

Stay tuned for live updates and analysis from our Possible11 Staff.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 12 Live Updates: Know all about United World Wrestling rules

According to the rules, wrestlers are required to weigh in twice: once on the morning of the preliminary rounds and again on the morning of the final. Vinesh successfully met the weight limit of 50kgs during the first weigh-in on Tuesday morning.

However, after competing in three bouts and replenishing herself throughout the day, Vinesh's weight likely increased. It is reported that she needed to shed approximately 2kgs overnight to meet the weight requirement for the final weigh-in.

Witnesses observed Vinesh skipping in a sweat suit following her semifinal bout, and she is said to have worked on losing the excess weight throughout the night. Despite her efforts, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit during the morning weigh-in.

The United World Wrestling's rule book, specifically Article 11, states, "If an athlete does not attend or fail the weigh-in (the 1st or the 2nd weigh-in), he will be eliminated of the competition and ranked last, without rank."

As a result of failing to meet the weight requirement, Vinesh will be disqualified from the competition and will lose her medal. The 50kg division will now award one gold medal and two bronze medals.
