Reliance Jio can become India's first telecom company to provide internet service through satellite. For this, the company has got approval to provide gigabit fiber internet. For satellite internet service, Reliance Industries Jio Platform had partnered with Luxembourg-based company SES in Europe. This joint venture has been named Orbit Connect India
According to a report by news agency Reuters, the joint venture has been given permission by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) to operate satellite in Indian airspace. According to the report, Orbit Connect India was given three types of approvals in April and June itself, but further approval will be required from the country's Department of Telecommunications to start operations.
Orbit Connect India has received this approval from the Indian Space Authority at a time when companies like Amazon.com and Elon Musk's Starlink are competing for permission to start satellite internet service in India.
According to the report, IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka said that another company Inmarsat has got approval to operate satellite to provide high-speed satellite based internet service in India. At the same time, Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper have also applied for approval.
Satcom service providers also need approval from the autonomous space regulator Indian Space Regulatory Authority of India (IN-SPACe). After this, the companies will have to wait for spectrum allocation from DoT.
The government is awaiting recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on how to allocate spectrum or radio frequencies for satellite services in the country. However, the recommendations are unlikely to come until TRAI gets a new chairman.
Starlink's job is to connect remote areas to high-speed internet via satellite. The company provides a kit that contains a router, power supply, cable and mounting tripod. The dish is placed under the open sky for high-speed internet. Starlink's app is available on iOS and Android, which does everything from setup to monitoring.
