Arvind Kejriwal to Resign as Delhi CM in 2 Days: What is Next for AAP?

Akanksha - September 15, 2024 04:18 PM

In a surprising move, Arvind Kejriwal, the three-time Chief Minister of Delhi, has announced his decision to resign from office in the next two days. This decision comes after his recent release from Tihar Jail, where he was granted bail in connection with the excise policy case. The anti-graft crusader, who rose to prominence through his relentless fight against corruption, has once again shaken the political landscape of Delhi.

Kejriwal, addressing AAP supporters, stated that the party will soon convene a meeting to decide on his successor. Senior AAP leader Atishi, a prominent figure in Kejriwal's cabinet, is seen as a likely candidate to take over the reins. If chosen, she will be tasked with leading the government during a critical period as assembly elections loom on the horizon.

Why Is Kejriwal Resigning?

Kejriwal's decision to step down comes amidst a political storm, with assembly polls due in February 2025. However, Kejriwal has requested the Election Commission to advance the polls to November 2024, aligning them with the Maharashtra elections. Given the logistical challenges, an early election seems improbable, but Kejriwal’s call for this shift reflects his strategic approach to maintaining momentum in the face of legal and political battles.

History Repeats: Kejriwal's 49-Day Resignation in 2013

This isn't the first time Kejriwal has resigned from his position as Delhi’s Chief Minister. In 2013, after forming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the wake of the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement, Kejriwal became Delhi's CM for the first time. His tenure, however, was short-lived, lasting just 49 days.

Kejriwal's government, formed with external support from the Congress, was marred by clashes over his proposed anti-corruption legislation, the Jan Lokpal Bill. Citing resistance from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress, Kejriwal stepped down, believing his fight against corruption was being undermined.

What is Next for AAP?

Despite this rocky start, Kejriwal and AAP made an impressive comeback. In the 2015 Delhi assembly elections, AAP won 67 out of 70 seats, cementing Kejriwal's position as a dominant political force. He retained power again in 2020, securing a third term as Chief Minister. His leadership has been defined by bold policies and strong opposition to corruption, making him a significant figure in Indian politics.

As Kejriwal prepares to step down once more, the big question remains: will this resignation help him return to power with renewed strength, or will it mark a turning point for AAP and Delhi’s political future?

The next few days will be crucial for both Kejriwal and his party. AAP's choice of the next Chief Minister, the strategy for upcoming elections, and Kejriwal’s potential role moving forward will shape the party's prospects. Whether his resignation is a tactical move or a genuine step towards change will soon become clear.
