Serge Gnabry put the Germans ahead in the 10th minute but Yeltsin Tejeda & Juan Pablo Vargas turned it around in the second half to revive Costa Rican hopes of a surprise qualification.
Germany were now left needing a massive result owing to Japan's turnaround in the other game. They went on to reclaim the lead through Kai Havertz's brace. Niclas Fullkrug got in on the act to make it 4-2 but that left Hansi Flick's side short by five goals, sending both sides out of the competition.
