Why Ruturaj Gaikwad not selected for India vs NZ ODIs?: The most surprising decision in the Indian team selection was the omission of Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad had scored a brilliant century batting at number 4 in the ODI series against South Africa and had proven his worth. Despite this, he was not included in the squad against New Zealand, and several major technical and strategic reasons seem to be behind this

The number 4 position where Ruturaj played in South Africa is originally Shreyas Iyer's spot. Iyer is now fully fit and has not only been included in the team but has also been given the important responsibility of vice-captain. The selectors have prioritized their experienced player (Iyer) over Gaikwad.

The BCCI is working on team balance keeping the T20 World Cup in mind. All-rounders like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja have been included in the team to provide depth in the bowling attack. Instead of including an extra pure batsman (Gaikwad), the selectors have opted for players who can also bowl.

The team already has two wicketkeeper-batsmen in KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, who provide strength to the middle order.
There wasn't even enough "space" in the team to keep Gaikwad as a backup.Image Source: X
Conclusion: Ruturaj Gaikwad's exclusion is not a result of his poor form, but rather a consequence of the team combination. He doesn't lack talent, but currently, Team India wants to move forward with its senior players and all-rounder options. Also Read: India Announce Squad for NZ ODIs: Gill as Captain, Shreyas Iyer Returns
