Batsman Shubman Gill of the Indian cricket team was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 until 2021; however, his affiliation with the team terminated after the team did not choose to keep him before the big auction. After that, he joined the Gujarat Titans, where he won the IPL championship in his debut season before taking over as captain in 2024. Although there has never been conflict between Gill and KKR, the youngster's remark during an exchange with well-known artist Ed Sheeran caused a stir on social media. Ed Sheeran learned during the chat that Gill was a player for a cricket team owned by Shah Rukh Khan.
When Sheeran answered that he was having dinner with SRK later, Gill immediately shot back, asking, Ask him why did they not retain me? On social media, a humorous moment has gone viral.
In an Indian Premier League match played here on Thursday, Punjab Kings were victorious by three wickets, although uncapped Shashank Singh's explosive innings eclipsed Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill's flawless unbeaten half-century.
In the course of leading GT to an overwhelming 199 for four, Gill struck six fours and four maximums in his career-high 89 off 48 balls.
Rahul Tewatia's eight-ball undefeated 23 and B Sai Sudharsan's 19-ball 33 also greatly aided him.
However, GT was in for a heartache as Shashank produced the knock of his life, finishing undefeated on 61 off 29 balls while smashing six boundaries and four sixes to help PBKS reach the finish line with one ball remaining.
Ashutosh Sharma (31 off 17) provided him with excellent assistance as the pair shared 43 runs off only 22 balls, raising expectations for PBKS that ultimately came true.
Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of PBKS, gave them an early scare as they were chasing a large total when he played onto a Umesh Yadav ball while attempting a shot through the cover zone.
Afghanistan left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad then dominated Jonny Bairstow (22 off 13), who wasn't playing at his best.
Prabhsimran Singh (35 off 24; 5x4s, 1x6) was the next wicket to fall for PBKS, who were reduced to 64 for three by the end of the eighth over. The batsman attempted a heave against an Ahmad delivery that was tossed up, but was caught by Mohit Sharma at third-man.
In Umesh Yadav's eleventh over, Sikandar Raza was dropped twice, albeit both were tough opportunities.
But Shashank was the one who took advantage of the extra life, hitting Umesh for two boundaries and a six to amass 17 runs in the eleventh over.
Raza's innings were cut short, though, as he was edged by a hard-length ball from Mohit to Wriddhiman Saha behind the wickets.
To keep PBKS in the chase, Shashank continued to use his long handle, racking up a few boundaries and sixes.
Shashank hung on to one end and, with the aid of five boundaries and three knocks over the fence, reached his fifty runs in just twenty-five balls.
Shashank's pyrotechnics were the only thing that kept PBKS in the fight. Ashutosh provided him with strong support as they both managed to steal triumph from the jaws of loss.
