During an Asia Cup 2025 match on Wednesday, a throw from Pakistani wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris struck umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge on the head, forcing a medical team to leave the field. The match was delayed by an hour because the PCB was upset with the match referee over a handshake controversy and was considering boycotting the match. When the ball hit the umpire on the head, a former Pakistani cricketer commentating on the incident made an offensive remark.
The incident occurred during the UAE innings. In the final over of the powerplay, a ball bowled by Pakistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris struck the umpire directly behind his head, who immediately ducked. A Pakistani player rushed to his side and signaled for the medical team. The Pakistan team's physio arrived and performed a concussion test, but umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge was forced to leave the field.
Former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram was commentating when the incident occurred. He said, "The ball hit the umpire straight on the head. What a throw! Bullseye." Fans didn't like this at all. The video is going viral on social media. Most people believe that the legendary player shouldn't have used such words.
After winning the toss, UAE elected to bowl first. Pakistan didn't get off to a good start, but Fakhar Zaman's (50) half-century and Shaheen Shah Afridi's crucial 29-run knock helped the team score 146 runs. In reply, UAE collapsed for 105 runs. With this win, Pakistan became the second team from Group A to advance to the Super Four, after Team India had already confirmed its place. The India vs. Pakistan Super Four match will be held on September 21st.
