A massive explosion rocked the historic Red Fort in the capital, Delhi, this afternoon, causing widespread panic in the area. The explosion originated in a car parked near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort. The explosion was so powerful that it spread panic in the surrounding area and set several vehicles on fire. According to preliminary information, one person has died and several others are seriously injured. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals. Five injured were reportedly rushed to LNJP Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion was so powerful that five to six vehicles were destroyed and some even caught fire. Following the explosion, heavy smoke spread in the surrounding area, and people began running for cover. Around 15 fire brigade vehicles arrived at the scene and are now engaged in extinguishing the fire.
According to sources, the explosion occurred in an Eco van, although this has not been officially confirmed. A forensic team has arrived at the scene and is examining the debris. The Sadiq Nagar Special Cell unit is also arriving to determine whether it was an accident or a terrorist attack.
Police have cordoned off the entire area and restricted public movement. A security alert has been issued in the areas around the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk. All nearby shops have been ordered to close, and police are monitoring the area using drones.
Senior Delhi Police officials are also present at the scene and are closely investigating the incident. Police say that preliminary investigations have not revealed whether the explosion was caused by a cylinder explosion or part of a planned attack. The exact details will be revealed only after the forensic team collects samples.
Locals say the blast shattered windows in nearby homes and tremors were felt some distance away. Several videos of the blast, clearly visible in the smoke and flames, have gone viral on social media.
The Home Ministry has also sought a preliminary report from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Security agencies are investigating whether any terrorist organization was behind the blast.
At present, police have sealed off the entire area and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas. Investigating agencies are trying to determine whether anyone was present in the car just before the blast, and in whose name the vehicle was registered.
This explosion, especially in an area that is historically and touristically sensitive, presents a significant challenge for security agencies, especially in areas like the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk, where thousands of tourists and locals visit daily.
Police and security agencies are now investigating every angle—whether it's a terrorist attack, a criminal conspiracy, or a technical malfunction. All aspects are being thoroughly investigated.
The fire has been completely extinguished. Delhi Police has appealed to the public not to spread rumors and to remain calm. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and a detailed police press conference is expected in the coming hours.
