Mount Maunganui/New Delhi, March 16, 2026: New Zealand's veteran leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has suffered a major setback. He has been ruled out of the ongoing home T20I series against South Africa after sustaining a fractured thumb during a training session. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and the ICC officially confirmed this today.
How did the injury occur?
Sodhi injured the thumb on his right hand after being struck by the ball while bowling during a training session at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday (March 14 or 15). Scans subsequently confirmed that the thumb was broken (fractured).
Rehabilitation Period: At least 4 weeks (up to four weeks)—meaning he will be unable to participate in the remaining matches of the series. Sodhi was ruled out even before the first match began.
Impact on IPL 2026
- Ish Sodhi plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL (he was with RR for the 2025 season and is expected to be with them for 2026 as well).
- IPL 2026 is scheduled to begin in March-April (tentatively starting around March 26–28).
- A four-week recovery period implies a return to fitness by mid-April; if the IPL begins early, Sodhi will not be available for the initial matches.
- Sodhi is a crucial component of RR's spin attack (forming a key combination with Yuzvendra Chahal). His absence is a cause for concern for the team, particularly regarding taking wickets during the Powerplay and middle overs.
- Fans and experts are worried: "Big blow for RR ahead of IPL 2026" – especially since Sodhi performed well in the 2026 T20 World Cup (having played 3 matches).
Sodhi's Background
- Sodhi is New Zealand's premier T20 spinner – with over 150 T20I wickets (a milestone he crossed in 2025).
- He played 3 matches during the 2026 T20 World Cup but was benched for the semi-final.
- This injury comes as an unfortunate blow for him, as he is currently uncontracted yet remains committed to playing for New Zealand.
