IPL 2026: Three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have taken a major decision ahead of the start of the 2026 IPL season. The team management has appointed explosive batsman Rinku Singh as vice-captain, while also clarifying that Ajinkya Rahane will continue as captain. The decision to appoint Rinku as vice-captain signals that the franchise has decided to move forward with a long-term plan regarding its leadership.
Head Coach Backs the Decision-
Ahead of the upcoming IPL season, KKR CEO Venky Mysore stated, "As Vice-Captain, Rinku will work closely with Captain Rahane." The team's new Head Coach, Abhishek Nayar, also endorsed this decision. Nayar remarked, "Over the past few years, I have watched him grow as a leader. He is a player the team always looks up to. We want to entrust Rinku with some responsibility. Following the T20 World Cup victory, I believe this is the perfect time to hand over this responsibility."
Rinku's journey has been incredible—
His journey so far has been nothing short of a miracle for Rinku. Rinku was bought for ₹80 lakh in 2018, but KKR retained him for the 2025 IPL season for a sum of ₹13 crore. Rinku grabbed headlines by smashing five consecutive sixes in the final over against the Gujarat Titans. This magnificent feat not only propelled Rinku to stardom but also earned him a spot in the Indian national team. Today, Rinku is renowned as a 'finisher'.
Immense Excitement Surrounding Rinku-
Prior to the start of the season, KKR organized an event in Kolkata. During this event, Rahane and Rinku were invited onto the stage together. As soon as Rinku stepped onto the stage, some fans began chanting slogans, demanding that he be appointed captain. This serves as a testament to Rinku's immense popularity and the frenzy surrounding him among KKR fans.
The entire KKR squad was present at this event. First, fast bowler Saurabh Dubey was called onto the stage and introduced to the fans. Saurabh has joined the team as a replacement for the injured Akash Deep. KKR will kick off their campaign in IPL 2026 on March 29 against the Mumbai Indians. The team is scheduled to depart for Mumbai on Wednesday.
