The fourth T20 International between New Zealand and West Indies, played in Nelson on Monday, was washed out due to persistent rain. The match saw only 39 deliveries being bowled before the weather intervened and play was abandoned. With the game called off, Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand side retained their 2-1 lead in the five-match T20I series. The fifth and final T20I will now take place in Dunedin on Thursday (November 13).
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first in the rain-affected contest. West Indies had a cautious start before Jimmy Neesham struck in the final over of the powerplay, dismissing Alick Athanaze (21), who was caught by Daryl Mitchell.
At the time rain halted play, the West Indies score read 38/1 in 6.3 overs. Aamir Jangoo (12)* and skipper Shai Hope (3)* were unbeaten at the crease. New Zealand used five bowlers during this brief phase, with Neesham being the only wicket-taker.
The series began with a thrilling win for West Indies, who clinched the opening T20I by 7 runs. However, the Kiwis bounced back strongly, winning the second match by 3 runs and the third by 9 runs, taking a 2-1 lead in the series.
The washout in the fourth game means New Zealand maintain their advantage, heading into the decisive final T20I in Dunedin.
Following the T20I series, New Zealand and West Indies will face off in a three-match ODI series, followed by a three-match Test series, marking the continuation of an exciting tour.
