The players celebrated wildly on Day 2 of the fourth Test match against India, but the third umpire ruled that Yashasvi Jaiswal was still out, which infuriated the England team's sense of sportsmanship. Ben Stokes, the captain of England, received criticism for his actions after someone brought up a specific incident involving Rohit Sharma that same day.
It happened on Saturday in Ranchi during the second session. Ben Foakes, the wicketkeeper, rushed forward to grab the ball as it moved towards him after Ollie Robinson angled over a length delivery that Jaiswal unnecessarily pushed to create an outside edge.
As they started to celebrate, players like Joe Root and Stokes were clear about the dismissal, even if Foakes was unsure. They had seen the replay first. As it was sent upstairs, Jaiswal awaited the ultimate verdict in the interim. The England players were astonished when third umpire Joe Wilson repeatedly viewed the footage and concluded that the ball had rebounded into Foakes' gloves.
Fans were incensed by the England players' response on social media because it brought back memories of Rohit's 'spirit of game' behaviour from Day 2. The captain of India had dismissed Joe Root with a catch at slip, but he was not convinced about it and asked the on-field umpire to referee it upstairs. Once more, Wilson determined that the ball had rebounded into his hand.
India captain Rohit Sharma, who was watching the game from the dressing room, indicated that the ball bounced into the mitts with his hands and appeared perplexed by England's celebration. Later, when Jaiswal was granted the nod, he was spotted grinning.
The left-hander, who did survive the ball, reached his half-century soon after, but Shoaib Bashir took three wickets in the session, bringing India down to 131 for four.
