And after 12 long years, the carnival of cricket, The World Cup, will once again be played in India from 5th October 2023 to 19th November 2023. The 2023 ODI World Cup will be the 13th edition of the tournament, and it's the first time India will solely host the tournament.
As the cricketing world gears up for this grand event on the field as well as in fantasy cricket world, let’s delve into some details of the tournament.
The ODI World Cup has previously been played in the Indian sub-continent on three separate occasions in 1987, 1996 and 2011. India and Pakistan jointly host ed the 1987 World Cup. In 1996, Sri Lanka was also included as a host alongside India and Pakistan. The 2011 World Cup was jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Ten teams (10) will be competing against each other to lift the most prestigious cricket title. Eight teams (8) directly qualified for the World Cup based on their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League standings. These teams are New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Australia, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and South Africa.
Sri Lanka and the Netherlands qualified for the World Cup through the World Cup qualifiers, which recently concluded in Zimbabwe.
In the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 45 group stage matches will be played according to the round-robin, followed by the semi-finals and final. Each team will play once in the group stage against the 9 remaining teams. After the completion of the group stage, the top four teams in the points tally will qualify for the semi-finals.
Twelve (12) different stadiums will host the warm-up matches, the group stage matches and the knockout matches. 1st Semi Final will be played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and 2nd Semi-Final will be played at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. India’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium, will host the tournament's final.
