In the middle order, Dewald Brevis contributed 23 runs and David Miller contributed an unbeaten 20 runs, helping South Africa post a mammoth total of 187 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.
Afghanistan's counterattack: Gurbaz's fiery innings

Chasing the target of 188 runs, Rahmanullah Gurbaz single-handedly changed the course of the match for Afghanistan. Gurbaz smashed 84 runs in just 42 balls, including 7 towering sixes. However, the middle order faltered, and apart from Rashid Khan (20) and Azmatullah (22), no one could make a significant contribution.

The match became even more complicated as Afghanistan kept losing wickets. Finally, Noor Ahmad scored 15 runs (two sixes) off 9 balls to level the match. Afghanistan were all out for 187 in 19.4 overs, forcing the match into a Super Over.

First Super Over: High-Voltage Drama in Ahmedabad
When the main match ended in a tie, no one expected the excitement to continue. Azmatullah Umarzai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz took the field for Afghanistan in the first Super Over.
Afghanistan's innings: Azmatullah made his intentions clear by hitting a four on the first ball and a towering six on the second. Afghanistan batted cautiously, putting 17 runs on the scoreboard.
South Africa's counterattack: Chasing a target of 18 runs, Miller took a single off the first ball and Dewald Brevis hit a six off the second. However, Brevis was caught out on the very next ball. Now the onus was on Tristan Stubbs. Needing six runs to win off the last ball, Stubbs smashed a silent six! The score was again tied at 17-17, and the match went into a double Super Over.
Second Super Over: Miller's 'killer' style and Maharaj's trap
History had been made the first double Super Over of the T20 World Cup 2026! This time, South Africa were to bat first, as per the rules.
South Africa's innings: Tristan Stubbs started the innings with a six off the first ball. Then came the storm of 'killer' David Miller. He hit two consecutive sixes off the fourth and fifth balls to take the score to 23. Afghanistan faced a mountain-sized target of 24 runs.
Afghanistan's bravery: Chasing the target, the Afghan team suffered a major setback on the second ball when Keshav Maharaj dismissed Mohammad Nabi for a duck. But Gurbaz wasn't ready to give up. He targeted Maharaj and smashed three consecutive sixes, creating a storm of noise in the stadium.
The thrill of the last ball: Afghanistan needed six runs to win on the last ball (after a wide). The entire stadium was silent. Gurbaz tried to play a big shot, but instead of crossing the boundary, the ball landed straight into the hands of David Miller.
