Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag recently revealed a distressing incident from his debut match against Pakistan, where he was subjected to verbal abuse by Pakistani players Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi. Sehwag, who played just two balls and scored one run before returning to the pavilion, shared his recollection of the incident, highlighting the proximity of the dressing room to the ground and the relentless onslaught of abuse he endured during his short time at the crease.
As Sehwag made his way to the crease, the dressing room in Mohali, India, situated right next to the ground, provided a clear path for the young cricketer. Unfortunately, this proximity also allowed Shoaib Akhtar to accompany Sehwag from the boundary line to the 30-yard circle, hurling verbal abuses along the way. The experience was disheartening for Sehwag, who was just 20 years old at the time, as he had to endure the onslaught of abusive language, despite being unaware of their meaning.

Shoaib Akhtar's verbal abuse was not the only ordeal Sehwag had to face during that match. Once Shoaib reached the boundary line, Shahid Afridi took over the onslaught of verbal attacks until Sehwag reached the crease. The combined barrage of abusive language from both players left Sehwag shaken and disconcerted, as he struggled to comprehend the intense verbal assault directed at him.
Despite the disappointment of his debut match, Sehwag made a firm decision to respond strongly the next time he stepped onto the pitch. As a Haryanvi jat, he could somewhat understand the Punjabi abuses hurled at him, which further fueled his determination to give it back to his opponents. Sehwag's experience became a turning point in his career, igniting a fire within him to not only excel with his cricketing skills but also to stand up against any form of abuse or injustice.
