Viacom-18 buys BCCI media rights for ₹5963 crore

Reliance Industries-owned broadcasting company Viacom-18 has purchased BCCI's media rights for domestic and international matches played in India for Rs 5,963 crore. On Thursday, the auction of television and digital rights of the board matches was held, which was won by Viacom-18.

Viacom has signed a contract with BCCI for 5 years i.e. till 2028. BCCI Secretary Jai Shah gave this information by tweeting. There will be 88 international matches in India in 5 years, which means the board will get about Rs 67.8 crore from one match. However, this deal will also include domestic and international matches of the women's team in India.

This time the auction was less than the previous cycle. The previous rights were bought by Star India for Rs 6138.10 crore, whose contract ended this year.

Challenged by Disney Plus and Sony Sports

Viacom-18 faced challenge from Disney Plus and Sony Sports. The board had also conducted e-auction for IPL media rights last year, while in 2018, offline auctions were held for BCCI rights.

Indian Board conducted e-auction for media rights. Under this, media rights were sold in two packages. Of these, Package-A was for TV, while Package-B was for digital and world broadcasting rights. The broadcast cycle will start from September 2023 to March 2028. There will be around 88 international matches during this period.

Previous rights were sold for about Rs 6 thousand crores

In the last auction, the Indian board had auctioned its media rights to Star India for $944 million (INR 6138 crore).

IPL media rights sold for Rs 48,390 crore

About a year ago, BCCI had sold the media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2023 to 2027 for Rs 48,390.52 crore. Disney Star bought the TV rights of the Indian continent for Rs 23,575 crore. Viacom-18 had purchased the digital rights of the Indian continent for Rs 20,500 crore and the non-exclusive digital rights of selected 98 matches for Rs 3,258 crore.
