Chris Silverwood's journey with Sri Lanka began with high hopes and great expectations. Appointed in April 2022, Silverwood brought a wealth of experience from his successful stint with the England cricket team. His career highlights included notable successes and a reputation for fostering strong team dynamics and strategic acumen.
Silverwood led Sri Lanka to several significant victories during his tenure. The most notable was winning the Asia Cup in 2022, a triumph that boosted the team's morale and confidence.
The team also secured a home ODI series win against Australia and an away Test series win against Bangladesh. Additionally, reaching the finals of the Asia Cup 2023 was another feather in Silverwood's cap, showcasing his ability to guide the team through high-pressure situations.

Despite these achievements, Silverwood's tenure was not without its challenges. The team's performance in the ICC Men's T20 World Cups in 2022 and 2024 and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 fell short of expectations. The recent failure to qualify for the Super Eight stage in the ongoing T20 World Cup highlighted the inconsistency that plagued the team during crucial tournaments.
“Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together,” said Silverwood.
“I would like to thank the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management of the SLC for their support during my time in Sri Lanka. Without your support, none of the success would have been possible."
The resignation of a head coach invariably affects team morale and performance. For Sri Lanka, the immediate concern is maintaining stability and continuity in their coaching setup.
The search for a new head coach will be pivotal in determining the team's future trajectory. Potential candidates are already being discussed, with a focus on finding a leader who can build on Silverwood's foundation while addressing the team's inconsistencies.
