IND vs SA 2nd Test: Gill ruled out of second Test, Rishabh Pant to captain

Shubman Gill has officially been ruled out of the second Test between India and South Africa. He left the field on the second day of the first Test in Kolkata with a neck injury. His pain was so severe that he had to be taken to the hospital. He was unable to bat in the second innings. Gill's participation was already in doubt when he arrived with the team in Guwahati, but the BCCI has now confirmed it in a statement. Rishabh Pant will captain the team in his absence.

BCCI said in its statement, Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati. Gill suffered a neck injury on the second day of the Kolkata Test and was taken to the hospital for evaluation after the end of the day's play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on November 19, 2025. Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to play in the second Test and will travel to Mumbai for further evaluation of his injury. In Gill's absence, Rishabh Pant will captain the team in the second Test.

Rishabh Pant will be the 38th Test captain

Rishabh Pant captained the team in the absence of Shubman Gill in the first Test against South Africa, but the Test in Guwahati will be his first as a full-time captain. He will be India's 38th Test captain. Rishabh Pant has a huge responsibility in the first Test, because even if the match ends in a draw, India will lose the series. In Kolkata, India lost by 30 runs while chasing 124.
