Afghanistan announced preliminary squad for Asia Cup 2025: Afghanistan has announced a 22-member preliminary team for the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup is to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 9 to 28 September. Afghanistan has also announced the team for the triangular series. Apart from Afghanistan, Pakistan and UAE teams will participate in the triangular series. The final 15-member team will be selected on the basis of performance and fitness after a two-week training camp.

Young spinner AM Ghazanfar has returned to the Afghanistan team, who made a strong comeback to competitive cricket after being injured. Ghazanfar was out for several months due to injury, but he performed brilliantly in domestic cricket. He was the highest wicket-taker for Derbyshire in the T20 Blast. He took 16 wickets in 14 matches. Ghazanfar had a strong performance against Yorkshire and bowled well.

Ghazanfar also represented Band-e-Amir Dragons in the 2025 Shpageeza Cricket League and took six wickets in six matches at an economy of 8.66. His return will strengthen Afghanistan's spin bowling attack, which already includes bowlers like Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Noor Ahmed. Mir Mubariz, a member of the selection committee of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), said, "We have announced the preliminary team for the preparation camp ahead of the triangular series and Asia Cup. During this time, the coaching staff and the captain will keep an eye on the young players who have got a place in this team.
