Will Shreyas Iyer play in the ODI series against South Africa?

Shreyas Iyer may be out of action for a long time. According to a recent report, Iyer has been advised to avoid strenuous exercise. According to India Today, Iyer's recovery may take at least two months. He suffered this injury during the ODI series against Australia when he fell on his chest while taking a catch. He was immediately hospitalized.

Shreyas Iyer underwent treatment in Sydney, Australia for a few days, but has now returned to India. Renowned sports medicine specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala performed an USG scan on him. The test report showed that Iyer is recovering, but it will take some time for him to fully recover.

Will be fit in 2-3 months -

He has been cleared to resume his daily activities and has been advised to do light exercises. Doctors have specifically advised him not to exert any strain on his abdomen. He will undergo another scan next week, and after two months of recovery, he will be able to begin rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

This means it will be at least three months before he can play any cricket matches. He may miss not only the ODI series against South Africa but also the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. The India vs. New Zealand ODI series will be played from January 11 to January 18.

Note that Shreyas Iyer was appointed vice-captain of the ODI team before the series against Australia. It remains to be seen whether Shreyas Iyer is fully fit and will be able to play in IPL 2026.
