Why Sheikh Hasina Resigned as Bangladesh PM

Kaif - August 06, 2024 01:12 PM

The crisis in Bangladesh, which has been burning in the fire of protests since July, is now deepening. After massive protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her post. The protests that started against reservation in government jobs spread across the country and became more violent with the demand for justice to those killed in violent incidents and the resignation of Hasina. On Monday, protesters attacked Hasina's official residence, after which the PM had to leave the country. There are reports of her taking refuge in India.

Sheikh Hasina was the Prime Minister of the country for 15 consecutive years. She has held this post for the longest time in Bangladesh. 76-year-old Hasina took over her fifth term as Prime Minister in January this year. The opposition parties boycotted this election and alleged that the elections were not conducted in a fair manner. Hasina, the daughter of revolutionary Sheikh Mujibur, who made a significant contribution in getting independence to Bangladesh, has led rapid economic development in the country. Last year he promised to make Bangladesh a prosperous and developed country. However, according to government data, about 18 million youth are unemployed in the country.

Why Sheikh Hasina Resigned as Bangladesh PM

  • The agitation going on in Bangladesh for several days has now turned violent and the situation has worsened to such an extent that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has had to flee the country.
  • Law and order has almost collapsed in front of the uncontrollable agitators. The capital Dhaka has been handed over to the rioters and signs of anarchy are visible everywhere in the Prime Minister's residence. The Home Minister's house has been set on fire and the ruling party's office has been burnt down.
  • In Bangladesh, the government abolished the 56 percent reservation given to different communities in the year 2018. On June 5 this year, the Dhaka High Court overturned the government's decision and re-implemented the reservation. After this, violent protests started across the country, in which more than 150 people lost their lives.
  • However, on July 21, 2024, the Supreme Court changed the decision of the High Court and reduced the reservation limit from 56 percent to 7%. In this, 5 percent was reserved for the families of freedom fighters (which was earlier 30%) and 2 percent for ethnic minorities, transgenders and disabled people.
