Why IndiGo flights cancelled: Over the past few days, hundreds of IndiGo flights have been cancelled and extensively delayed at major airports across India, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. This situation has led to widespread passenger outrage at several airports, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai.
What is the main reason for Indigo flight cancellation?
IndiGo has cited "numerous unforeseen operational challenges" for the widespread disruption, including technical issues, bad weather, and extreme congestion.
However, the primary reason is the new Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) regulations introduced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
DGCA's new rules and implications:
- These regulations focus on pilot and crew comfort to improve safety .
- Key changes include a longer weekly rest, a broader definition of night duty, and limiting night shifts for pilots to two per roster period.
- IndiGo operates on its high frequency model with heavy night operations, which does not match these new DGCA duty limits.
Why is Indigo the most affected?
The Airline Pilots Association of India and the Federation of Indian Pilots say the disruption is directly caused by IndiGo's unconventional low-manpower strategy.
- IndiGo operates over 2,200 domestic and international flights daily, almost double the daily operations of Air India.
- Pilot unions say other airlines had enough time to prepare for the change, but IndiGo started preparations late and could not adjust the roster properly.
How many flights were cancelled? (as of today, December 5, 2025)
The disruption in operations continued for the fourth consecutive day.
- Delhi: All flights from Delhi have been cancelled till midnight (11:59 PM) today. According to sources, over 550 flights were cancelled at various airports on Friday, including 172 at Delhi airport.
- Bengaluru: At least 102 flights were cancelled early Friday morning due to disruptions in Bengaluru for the fourth consecutive day.
- Other cities: Mumbai (85 flights), Hyderabad (68), and Chennai (31) were also badly affected, and all flights cancelled for today at Chennai airport were of IndiGo.
When will the situation become normal?
IndiGo has stated that operations will return to normal within the next 48 hours. The airline is operating around the clock and making short-term proactive cancellations to facilitate operations.
However, according to a PTI report, IndiGo has informed the DGCA that stable flight operations will be fully restored by February 10, 2026.
IndiGo Refund and Discount Policy
IndiGo has provided information regarding refunds on cancellations:
- Refunds for all cancellations will be processed automatically according to your original payment method.
- The airline will offer a full waiver on all cancellation/rescheduling requests for travel between December 5, 2025, and December 15, 2025.
