ICC AGM agenda: The ICC's Annual General Meeting, which began on Thursday, will continue till Sunday and in this, the parent body can approve many big decisions.
Two-tier test system is on top agenda of ICC, know in detail how it will work
The four-day Annual General Meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is going to be held in Singapore from Thursday to Sunday under the chairmanship of new President Jay Shah. And in this, many big issues related to the game will be discussed as well as decisions will also be taken in this regard. One of these important issues is also the 'two-tier Test system'. Under this, promotion and demotion of teams in the points table is also included.
In such a situation, under the two-tier system, teams considered weak can be seen in one group, while strong teams like India, England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will be in one group. However, if this system is given the green signal as per expectations, then at present this proposed system will be implemented from the next World Test Championship (WTC) circle (2028-30).
ICC goal behind the Tier-2 system
Actually, the parent organization wants the teams to be divided into two groups on the basis of performance so that the top or strong teams get a chance to play against each other more and at regular intervals. At the same time, the lower ranked teams will be motivated to compete with each other and join the top group. The ICC's goal behind this proposed system is to make the game more exciting and also to increase the commercial value of Test cricket.
Promotion/Demotion is an important part of the system
In the Tier-2 system, ICC can include promotion and demotion for teams. India's domestic Ranji Trophy system is also similar. Under the Tier-2 system, the top two teams included in it will be included in Tier-1 on the basis of performance, while the two worst teams of Tier-1 will be pushed to Tier-1. This means that after the implementation of the system, the level of play and competition can be seen even higher.
These will be the benefits of implementing the Tier-2 system
Unlike the current system, the first big advantage of implementing the Tier-2 system will be that global fans will get to see more matches between the big teams at regular intervals. And this will make the matches more competitive and interesting. Apart from this, the teams included in the Tier-2 group will have more opportunities to develop their skills, so they will also get more matches than before against their equal teams in ability. Also, when their target will be to make place in Tier-1, then more competitive cricket will be seen in this group as well.
There will be an increase in income
When the top teams will be in one group and the level of cricket will be higher and more exciting than before, then obviously TV viewership and gate money (earnings from spectators in the stadium) will also increase. And this will have a direct impact on the total income. Overall, the Tier-2 system is beneficial in many aspects. Although, it has some negative aspects as well, but the positives outweigh it. And it is expected that the ICC will approve this agenda in its Annual General Meeting or will take it forward strongly.
