Magnus Carlsen has won the Norway Chess 2025 title. The world champion won the title by defeating India's Gukesh and Italian-American chess player Fabiano Caruana. Indian chess player Gukesh finished third.
What did Carlsen say after the victory
After the victory, Carlsen said, "It is a great relief after such a day and such a tournament. My struggle finally yielded a good result. I fought till the end, I am happy with that. When asked if he would continue playing in the classical chess format, Carlsen said, "Not much for sure. I would not say that this tournament was my last tournament. I enjoy other formats of chess more.
Norway Chess 2025 Final
In the final game against Arjun Erigaisi, world number 1 chess player Carlsen had 15 points while Gukesh was just half a point behind him with 14.5 points. Gukesh was pitted against Caruana, who was in the title race with 12.5 points. Gukesh lost his match.
The fourth player in the title race was Hikaru Nakamura (who had 13 points) who drew his match with China's Wei Yi and with this his chances of winning the title ended. Whereas against Arjun Erigaisi, Carlsen changed the game in the last five rounds and won. After which he became the champion.
The most memorable moments of the Norway Chess 2025 tournament
The most memorable moment of this tournament was when Indian star D Gukesh defeated world number-1 Magnus Carlsen. This was Gukesh's first win against Carlsen in classical chess. After the defeat, Carlsen punched the chessboard in anger, causing the pieces to shatter. However, he later apologized to Gukesh and even patted his back.
