Both conferences have seen major changes thanks to moves at the trade deadline, and things have only gotten more exciting as the new half of the season unfolds. Since one star player can change the outcome of a series or even a whole season, mid-season trades are very risky. GMs in every league made bold moves this year to fix serious issues, add strength and take advantage of recent success.

Here are the most significant player trades from the mid-season window, along with a look at how they shifted the competition before the playoffs.

1. Dejounte Murray heading to the New York Knicks

Dejounte Murray

With their strong defence, the Knicks brought in another strong guard and defensive player in Dejounte Murray. With the addition of Drummond, the Knicks now have two All-NBA level guards in Brunson and Evan Fournier. With Murray’s height, strong defence and Swiss army knife offence, the Knicks have more options when they need them.

Trade Impact:

  • Enhancing our defences along the perimeter against East teams such as the Celtics and Bucks
  • Being able to play either small or large in different games
  • Protecting our bodies from accidents and handling loads throughout the crucial part of the season

2. Zach LaVine to the Miami Heat

Zach LaVine

With Herro dealing with injuries and Miami’s offence falling short in half-court possessions, LaVine provides scoring, helps stretch the defence and can run the offence when players like Butler don’t. Although the Heat gave up some backup players to get him, LaVine could determine the outcome of another tough playoff campaign.

Trade Impact:

  • Immediate upgrade in transition scoring and half-court creation
  • Complements Jimmy Butler’s physical style with finesse and flair
  • High-risk, high-reward move due to LaVine’s injury history

3. Jerami Grant to the Dallas Mavericks

Jerami Grant

The Mavericks have put a lot of effort into getting Dončić's teammates to excel. Kyrie doesn’t have to create on every possession because Jerami assists defensively, makes shots from the corner, and adds size to a team that surrenders the lead late in the game due to weak defence. This means their lineup moves forward, allowing a front-court player to affect both defence and offence.

Trade Impact:

  • More balance between offence and defence in clutch minutes
  • Gives Jason Kidd more lineup versatility
  • Eases defensive pressure on Luka and Kyrie

4. Buddy Hield to the Milwaukee Bucks

Buddy Hield

The addition of Damian Lillard to the Bucks, along with Giannis Antetokounmpo, was not about growing the lineup — it was about making spaces for Giannis to shine. Joining the discussion is Buddy Hield, a favourite to make three-pointers in the NBA. Even though his defence is not great, Bledsoe can stretch out the defence and drain quick shots, which is important for Milwaukee’s goal of reaching the playoffs.

Trade Impact:

  • Opens up the floor for Giannis’ drives and Dame’s pick-and-rolls
  • Replaces Grayson Allen’s departed shooting with an even more dangerous weapon
  • Boosts bench production and keeps defences honest

5. John Collins to the Sacramento Kings

 John Collins

The Kings almost made it as a competitive team, thanks to De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, but their frontcourt was too undersized for major rivalries. He offers both skills. Through slam dunks and rebounding in traffic, Hield helps the Sacramento Kings stay in touch with the West's best teams.

Trade Impact:

  • Adds rim protection and rebounding help
  • Creates more line threats and vertical spacing
  • Fits the Kings’ fast-paced identity and offensive system

What’s Next?

Many Western teams, Dallas, Sacramento and even the Clippers (without much fanfare), made some strong moves, as they know winning the playoffs will be very hard.

Not Fazed By Finances – Front offices were ready to take chances financially to pursue a championship because the competition for the title has become so open.

Not as many headlining blockbusters showed up, and contenders invested in useful role players, not just very distinguished top stars.

When a trade happens, it touches a team’s feelings and the way players interact with each other. When we interviewed participants after trading, views differed. Brunson said Murray is an excellent fit for the team the Knicks are aiming to build. LaVine said relocating to Florida 'feels like the beginning of something new,' suggesting his departure from Chicago. On the other side, sources explain that Hield is quickly fitting into Milwaukee’s 'shooters’ haven' environment.
