Most centuries in Tests: Joe Root surpasses Sangakkara to reach fourth spot on all-time list
Joe Root scored his 39th Test century off 137 balls on the fourth day of the fifth and final Test between England and India at the Oval on Sunday to become the fourth-highest century-scorer in the history of the format.
Root surpassed Kumar Sangakkara's tally of 38 centuries and now trails only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ricky Ponting (41) in terms of Test centuries.
During his innings on Sunday, Root also became the first batsman to score 6,000 runs in World Test Championship (WTC) history.
The former England captain, who has over 13,500 runs to his name, is currently the second-highest run-scorer in Test history and is eyeing to break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 15,921 runs.
