According to legend, Shravan Kumar started the Kanwar Yatra in Treta Yuga. His blind parents expressed their desire to take a bath in the Ganga at Haridwar. In such a situation, his son Shravan Kumar took his parents on foot carrying a Kanwar on his shoulders and made them take a bath in the Ganga. After this, he took Ganga water from there, with which he duly anointed Lord Shiva. It is a religious belief that the Kanwar Yatra started from then.
