Cluster Bomb: During an attack in Israel, the name of 'cluster bomb' suddenly came into discussion. This bomb is as dangerous as it is complex. Its power and terror is so much that once it falls, its effect can be felt in an area as large as several football fields. Let us understand what this cluster bomb is, how it works and whether Israel has any way to protect itself from it.
What is a cluster bomb?

A cluster bomb is an explosive weapon designed to cause damage not on a single target but on a large area. When this bomb is dropped from the air, it explodes in the air before reaching the ground and hundreds of 'subbombs' or 'bomblets' (small bombs) present inside it scatter all around. Each bomblet falls on a different target and explodes there. Because of this, this bomb is extremely destructive and can damage a large number of people, vehicles, buildings and military bases simultaneously.
How does this bomb work?
The technology of cluster bomb works in such a way that it has a main container which holds hundreds of small explosives inside. As soon as this container reaches a fixed height, it opens in the air with the help of a timer or sensor and the small bombs inside it spread rapidly in different directions.
These bomblets can explode immediately after falling on the ground or can also blast with some time delay, due to which the danger remains for a long time. In some cases, these small bombs fall on the ground but do not explode and remain there as 'unexploded mines', which remain deadly for common citizens for years.
Is it allowed internationally?
Many countries, including the United Nations, have banned the use of cluster bombs as they pose a serious threat to civilian lives. More than 100 countries have banned them under an international treaty called the 'Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM)' in 2008. However, some countries like the US, Russia, China, Israel are still not a part of this treaty and use it only under special circumstances.
Does Israel have a solution to avoid this?
Israel has one of the world's most advanced air defence technologies, the 'Iron Dome', which destroys missile and rocket attacks in mid-air. But in the case of cluster bombs, this system is limited as it contains hundreds of small explosive units together, which are technically very challenging to intercept one by one in mid-air.
Although Israel has developed a multi-layer air defense system that includes technologies such as 'David's Sling', 'Arrow System' and 'Iron Beam'. These systems together have the potential to prevent large-scale attacks, complete protection from dispersive weapons such as cluster bombs is not currently considered possible.
