IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant stretchered off with foot injury on day one
Rishabh Pant retired hurt on the first day of the fourth Test between India and England in Manchester on Wednesday. The Indian wicketkeeper-batsman suffered a leg injury in the 69th over and could not bat further. He was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja when India were down to 212 for three.
Pant tried to go for a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes. However, the ball took his inside edge and went on to hit his front leg. Pant called the physio for treatment. However, as the treatment took longer, the umpires asked him to leave the field. He was batting on 37 off 48 balls when he was taken off on a stretcher.
As per the ICC's playing conditions, Pant will be eligible to bat again. Section 25.4 states, "A batsman may retire at any time during his innings when the ball is dead. Before allowing play to resume, the umpires must state the reason for the batsman's retirement."
"If a batsman retires due to illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, that batsman is entitled to resume his innings."
However, the rules also add that a retired batsman can only return if a wicket falls or if another batsman is injured. Pant injured his finger while wicketkeeping in the first innings during the third Test at Lord's. Dhruv Jurel kept wicket for the rest of the match and Pant came out to bat.
